Steigar - Atari ST [036] PlayThru

Steigar is a side scrolling shooter that was released for the Atari ST in 1989.  Unfortunately, this appears to be a game without an ending.

NOTE: A trainer was used for making this capture.

I believe there are 5 stages, and once the fifth stage is completed, the player is sent back to stage 1.  I think that choice was a little lazy on the design side, but that is me.

Graphically, I think the game looks really good.  The sprites are well drawn, and objects move on the screen OK.  The ST does not appear to get overwhelmed by the action on screen.  Thumbs up for the art.

The sound:  Sound effects are the only sound heard while playing.  They are OK, but some tunes would have been nice.

Playability:  I am not a fan of how this game handles or controls.  The added realism with firing the way the chopper is facing is nice, but I feel some of the hitboxes are lacking, and there are some issues at times with the speed of enemy bullets.  I think the actual play is the downside of the game, besides the lack of music during levels.

My verdict?  If you are a fan of challenging shooters, give this game a whirl; it is difficult.  Not a shooter fan?  Skip it!

Capture info -

This video was captured on December 22, 2019.

Game was played on an Atari 1040 STf, TOS 1.4, 1MB, equipped with a CosmosEX from Jookie.
A Best Electronics ST Monitor to VGA cable was used, connected to an OSSC 1.6 (processing the video in Line4x mode), with the output being captured by a Startech USB3HDCAP.
