Here we have R-Type II, for the ST, unfortunately not ported by Electric Dreams, but still a decent effort by Arc Developments for Activision.

My biggest gripe is the game feels slow, very sluggish. I am not sure if this game would work on a Mega STe, but I wonder if running it at 16 Mhz instead of the ST's stock 8 Mhz would improve the game.
Otherwise, take out the sluggishness, the controls are decent, and the graphics are drawn quite well. I have never played the arcade version of R-Type II, so I can not really compare on how well the port was done. This game does have both music and sound effects, but I think the sluggishness of the gameplay sort of adds a detractor from that.
Verdict? Want to see where R-Type went after the first issue? Worth a try. Like side scrolling shooters? Give it a shoot. Casual gamer? Probably a pass.
