War Zone - Atari ST [030] PlayThru

War Zone is a nice shooter, dare I say Ikari Warriors clone, made by Core Designs and released, I believe, in 1989 for the ST and Amiga.

NOTE: A trainer was used for making this capture.

I must say, I am impressed with the implementation of the game.  The artwork and sprite art are really good.  Gameplay is well-handled and the sound effects are good.  Although, one of my common complaints, there is no background music in game, just sound effects.  But I do not believe this issue really diminishes the gameplay too much.

War Zone is basically a vertical scrolling run and gun shoot'em up, with a nice weapons powerup system that in most places provides a player with plenty of weapon options.  My favorites are the flamethrower and the homing missles.

The game contains 8 stages of gameplay, and also supports 2 players.  The stages might be a little repetitive, but that is not too bad.  At the end of each stage is a boss fight.  I guess some of the enemies at a couple mid points could be considered mini bosses.

Besides weapons power ups, there are extra life drops, and also hostages that can be rescued.  Be careful, it is easy to kill a hostage, as I masterfully displayed in this playthru of the game.

Definitely a worthy titles if you are a fan of games like Ikari Warriors.  With a little polish, this would have made an excellent arcade release back in the day.

Capture info -

This gameplay was captured on January 6, 2019.

Game was played on an Atari 1040 STf, TOS 1.4, 1MB, equipped with a CosmosEX from Jookie.
A Best Electronics ST Monitor to VGA cable was used, connected to an OSSC 1.6 (processing the video in Line4x mode), with the output being captured by a Startech USB3HDCAP.

Video was edited with Shotcut.
